It was suggested to me to read a book whose title starts, "How I Raised Myself". Sound like a great book, lots of personalized learning involved there. Looked at the book also. It's been around for a really long time so some of the stories are astounding compared to life today. But the chapters are short and packed full of good points. The only thing about the book is how the title ends, "...From Failure to Success in Selling." The "Failure to Success" still sounds amazing. But why would I want to teach you something out of a sales book?
Did you know that you are in sales every moment of every day?
Every time you meet someone new, you have exactly 30 seconds to sell yourself as a person they may want to spend time with or even listen to. And what about that great movie you just saw last week? Who did you tell about it and suggest that they go and see it or don't?
Almost every conversation you have has some aspect of selling to it.
Below you will see some of the highlights from the book and I'll let you see for yourself how much selling you do every day of your life.

Ways To Win And Hold Confidence Of Others
- Deserve confidence. The real test is do YOU believe in yourself. If not, will the other person?
- To have confidence in yourself, and win, and hold the confidence of others; KNOW your business ...and keep knowing your business.
- "I will speak ill of no man and speak all the good I know of everybody." - Benjamin Franklin
- Praise even your competitors. It's easy to like the people that you already like. Try liking someone that you don't.
- Cultivate the habit of making understatements; never exaggerate.
- Bring your witnesses. Keep people close that can confirm that you know what you say that you know and you can do what you said you would do.
- Look your best. Put yourself in the hands of an expert (if you are unsure yourself).
Believe in yourself and others will automatically believe in you as well.
Be confident in what you know and there's less chance be questioned.
If you talk highly of someone, they will want to achieve that level of greatness. No one wants to have negative thoughts about them floating around out there. This is a perfect way to win your "enemy" over from the dark side. Pay them compliments; to their face and behind their back. It will change the way they see you.
Exaggerating will only get you into trouble. If you promise more than you can produce, people will be disappointed in you. Using big words like "never", "always", "hate", and "love" may give the wrong impression and leave you a liar. Do more than you promise and be humble about your abilities. Let others discover how wonderful you can be without bragging on yourself and your abilities.
Your "witness" will provide itself as long as you keep in mind the lessons on How To Win Friends. If you've done something right, people will be happy to brag on you. Especially if you are humble about your greatness.
Look your best. Being comfortable is a fantastic feeling. There are ways to be comfortable and look your best at the same time. People will take you more serious if your clothes are clean, you smell good, you don't have holes in your clothes, and you match (or at least coordinate).

Things You Can Gain By The Question Method
- Helps you avoid arguments.
- Helps you avoid talking too much.
- Enables you to help the other fellow recognize what he wants. Then you can help him decide how to get it.
- Helps crystallize the other person's thinking. The idea becomes their idea.
- Helps you find the most vulnerable point with which to close the sale - the key issue.
- Gives the other person a feeling of importance. when you show that you respect their opinion, they are more likely to respect yours.
Each time you have a successful interaction with someone, it's like adding another grain of sand to your beach.
Do you want a sandbox or a dessert?
When you ask more questions than you make statements, you take control of the conversation and it helps both of you understand what is being heard and not just what is being said. It does also allow you not to talk too much because as we learned in How To Win Friends, people love to be heard. They will think you are the best person ever if you allow them to do most of the talking. (Did you catch my exaggeration?)
Asking questions helps the other person clarify what they are trying to say. If you get them to answer enough questions, you may help them find their own answer or at least find the easiest way to help them accomplish what they are trying to do.
Now, you're not going to be closing a sale, but we did talk about this at the top of the page. Every interaction you make is a sale; either in your idea or in yourself. If you are having a difficult time in getting others to see your point of view (your sales pitch), then asking questions is the best way to find the glitch that's occurring between what you are trying to say and what they are trying to hear. Remember, not everyone sees the same shade of blue or think of the same pencil. You may have to ask more questions rather than thinking they're an idiot.
The most valuable reason for asking questions is to allow the other person to feel important. If you assume that you know what they're going to say or do without asking them anything, they'll feel useless and discouraged. It doesn't take much to make someone feel important. Give them your undivided attention and ask them what they think.

Making People Want To Do Business With You ...adjust to say ...want to do anything with you
- "If you would win a man to your cause, first convince him that you are his sincere friend." - Abraham Lincoln
- If you want to be welcome everywhere, give every living soul you meet a smile, and honest-to-goodness smile, from down deep inside.
- You will have much less difficulty remembering names and faces when you:
- Get a clean impression of name and face.
- Repeat their name at short intervals.
- Associate their name with an action picture if possible.
- Be brief. A salesman cannot know to much, but they can talk too much.
- Go to see the person you're afraid to call on, and admit you're scared. You pay them a big compliment.
Isn't it amazing how all of these studies are melting together and reinforcing each other?
Be a sincere friend and let them know that you are their friend. Don't do anything that would cause them to question your friendship.
Smile! It's contagious like a virus but a whole lot better for everyone.
Remembering names is a challenge I go through on a daily basis and I am not the best at it. I'm getting better because I'm learning to connect the faces to places and it makes it easier to remember names. Repeatedly saying their name in the conversation will help it stick a little better as well.
Be brief. People do not like being talked to death. There is a personality that does love to hear themselves talk and this is a real challenge for them. Give them just enough information to make an intelligent decision in the matter you are discussing.
The suggestion about seeing the person that you are afraid to call on will be important through life. Because most times if you are afraid to talk to them, you think highly of them and think they are very important. Or you may be unsure of what they will say to you, which means that it's a perfect opportunity to try out some of your new skills in showing respect and making them feel important. What you think of someone is not usually how they see themselves.

Some more great ideas.
- Force yourself to act enthusiastic, and you'll become enthusiastic.
- Go out and earnestly talk to 4-5 people every day.
- If you want to overcome fear and develop courage and self-confidence rapidly, join a good course in public speaking.
- One of the greatest satisfactions in life comes from getting things done and knowing you have done them to the best of your ability.
- Take more time to think and do things in the order of their importance.
To Sum It All Up
Sales is a scary word in today's society. I believe it's because people don't understand what sales is all about. It's about being excited about something and believing that it is good and wanting everyone else to experience it as well because you believe that they will enjoy it as well. It's helping others to see things from your point of view.
It feels good when people see things in the same way that you do.
Don't let fear stop you from going out and sharing with others the things that you are excited about.
Have confidence in yourself.
Remember, you think about yourself a whole lot more than anyone else thinks about you.
